For all of the people living in the Denver Metro Area (including locations such as Parker, Littleton, Centennial) in Colorado, Tricare covers TMS treatment for active duty, veterans and their dependents.
Tricare would cover TMS treatment when the following conditions are met:
- The patient has major depressive disorder (depression)
- The patient has tried antidepressants and continues to have symptoms of depression
- The patient has tried psychotherapy (counseling) and continues to have symptoms of depression
- The patient has tried antidepressants but is unable to tolerate them and has distinct side effects from the medications (emotional dulling, GI side effects, nausea, headaches, sedation, weight gain, decreased energy, cognitive blunting “mind fog.”)
If the above conditions are met, then Tricare would cover TMS treatment. TMS treatment would entail an initial “mapping” session to find the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex along with the motor threshold. Then there would follow 29 treatments and the 6 taper off sessions for a total of 36 treatments. More treatments can be done if necessary, but the normal treatment course is 36 treatments.
Advantages of TMS treatment is that utilizing the intermittent theta burst, treatment is fast (only 4 minutes), there is no anesthesia, you can drive to the appointment and drive home without any trouble, minimal side effects, no medications required, and can have lasting effects on your depression. At Front Range TMS, we understand that you are busy, so we try to get you in and out of your appointment as quick as possible which is usually within 10 minutes so that you can get on to the rest of your day.
